Chapter Thirteen

Rolly got enough sleep that he didn’t feel as weak as a newborn calf when the sun came up. Using the power he’d held inside him had really wiped him out.

And the way Edie had loved at him, that’d done him in, too. She was very creative, and virile, to put it mildly. After waiting so many years for his mate, Rolly would have no trouble keeping up with her when it came to sex. Shifters were a horny group by nature.

“Do you think we can have sex in our shifted forms?”

Rolly nearly dropped his coffee cup when Edie asked him that. He calmly set the mug down on the counter. “We can.”

Edie waggled her eyebrows at him. She was clad in nothing but a robe he’d found stashed in his closet. Rolly thought she was unbearably adorable.

“When can we?” Edie asked. Then her eyes rounded. “Crap! Rolly, my purse is in the circle. My cell phone, the amulet Azil made for me, my wallet—I need to get it. I’ll be right back.”

“Wait, wait just a minute.” Rolly decided to chug his coffee real quick. It was little more than lukewarm anyway as he gulped it down. He put his cup in the sink. “Not by yourself. Remember, we’re all supposed to stick to pairs or bigger groups.”

Eddie huffed. Her hair wasn’t neatly tamed today, but rather a riot of black corkscrew curls that bounced all around her head when she exhaled. “I did forget, actually. Do you really think there’s danger? Can you feel bad mojo or anything?”

“I did last night, but not until right before we were attacked. That’s not very useful, is it?” Rolly had to touch that hair. He crossed over the few feet between them and touched it. “So soft and springy. I love this.” He tugged on a coil of it.

Edie crossed her eyes at him. “Ugh. It’s so much work to get it straight. I want to get some more wigs. I have two.”

“We can get you more,” Rolly said. “And we can move your things over here today if you’d like, if we have time. I want you here with me.”

Edie glanced down, gnawing on her bottom lip in a way that Rolly knew meant she was thinking about something important to her.

He didn’t pry when he didn’t feel her sharing her concerns mentally. It didn’t take much on his part to make an accurate guess as to what she was concerned about. “I know you’ve never lived away from your family, but we’re only a couple of minutes away if we run or drive. I have to be here, with my workrooms and mediation room. All of my herbs and plants and tools are here, and there are things the younger kids might get into that could cause them harm.”

“Like?” Edie asked.

“Wolfsbane, for one, and oleander. It’s incredibly poisonous,” he explained.

“Then why have either of them?”

Rolly thought of the many other toxins that had good uses. “Well, despite being quite poisonous, oleander also has medicinal uses.
